NHS Tameside and Glossop is now responsible for local NHS dental services.

Service Description

Tameside and Glossop have 26 General Dental Practices providing routine NHS dental care. NHS Orthodontic treatment for under 18s is provided at 4 practices on referral from your regular dentist. 

CHARGES FOR NHS DENTISTRY

There are currently only three charge bands for NHS dental treatment:

  •  Band 1 - £17.00 
  •  Band 2 - £47.00
  •  Band 3 - £204.00

NHS Dental Treatment is free for children and certain other groups meeting the exemption criteria.
Help with NHS Dental Charges may be available and can be obtained by those meeting the criteria by completion of a HC1 form available from your dentist.    

How to Access Dental Services in Tameside & Glossop

Emergency Dental Care In-Hours

For those residents of Tameside and Glossop who do not have a regular dentist and are suffering from a dental emergency, urgent treatment can be provided by our In-Hours Emergency Dental Service. This service can be accessed between the hours of 9am and 4pm Monday – Friday by calling 0161 335 2700. 
This is a central point of contact and you will be offered an appointment to deal with problem at one of our practices within the Tameside and Glossop area usually on the same day.

Dental Access Centre

If you are unable to find a dentist in your area and require routine care you can ring 0161 335 2700 to access the Dental Access Service

Two new dental access centres have opened to the public at Union St Clinic in Hyde and at Gamesley Clinic near Glossop.

The service was initially introduced as a pilot and patients were referred by word of mouth.  However it had been so successful it is now being promoted to the wider public.

 Out-of-Hours

Dental Emergencies outside of normal surgery hours are dealt with by the Out-of-Hours Emergency Dental Service. The Out-of Hours Service is for those patients with defined dental emergencies, which include:

·                    Trauma including dental injuries

·                    Significant and worsening facial swelling

·                    Dental bleeding

·                    Dental conditions which have resulted in acute systemic illness or raised temperature due to infection

·                    Severe restricted opening of the mouth (causing inability to eat even soft food)

·                    Dental symptoms that are likely to significantly affect other medical conditions

·                    Severe dental and facial pain not controlled by over the counter preparations

This service can be accessed by calling 0161 230 6029 between the hours of 6.30pm and 8am Monday – Thursday and 6.30pm Friday – 8am Monday, weekends and Bank Holidays. This service is for Tameside and Glossop residents whose Doctor  (not dentist) is in Tameside and Glossop, Stockport, Manchester or Trafford Primary Care Trusts. Patients registered with a Doctor in other PCT areas should ring the main NHS Direct number on 0845 46 47.  

Other dental problems such as lost or fractured fillings, loose or displaced crowns, bridges, veneers or dentures do not usually constitute an emergency and should be dealt with during normal surgery hours by your regular dentist.

Home Visits

Home visits for dental care are available for those residents unable to leave their home to perform routine tasks such as shopping and visiting the doctor or hairdresser. For further advice and appointments please ring the Home Dentistry Line on 0161 366 4117 where you will be connected to an ansaphone and requested to leave your details including a daytime contact telephone number. 

Community Dental Service

The PCT Dental Service provides preventative and restorative treatment services to priority groups including children, adults, elderly persons and patients with Special Needs who require specialised treatment skills not available in the General Dental Practice. The care is provided in the community clinics and home setting. Specialist care with inhalation sedation is provided at four clinics and treatment under general anaesthesia for simple extractions in children, is provided within the hospital setting at Tameside Hospital. These services are provided on referral from your regular dentist.

The PCT Dental Service also provides epidemiological services for children, elderly persons and other target groups within the community.
