
The Health Improvement Service – Weight Matters
If you are overweight or obese, losing 10% of your body weight can make you feel and look great AND dramatically reduce your chances of ill health such as heart disease, cancer and type two diabetes. Weight Matters is a free NHS weight loss service and our advisers will work with you to develop a personal health plan through a combination of individual and group support which can help you lose weight and keep it off.
This service is available free to anyone aged 16 and over who lives within Tameside & Glossop or has a GP within Tameside and Glossop
What do we do?
The Weight Matters Team believes that through a little extra knowledge, motivation, support and effort, you can make the small changes needed to improve your diet and everyday lifestyle.
Your programme starts with a 1:1 meeting with a friendly, qualified Weight Matters Trainer to find out how much weight you want to lose and how to achieve it without dieting. You will then move onto our interactive and fun six week programme helping you get to grips with healthy eating, portion size, food labels, getting active and more. Weekly weigh-ins and further individual follow up appointments will ensure you meet your goals.

Weekly weigh in and support meetings
You’ll get the support that you need to succeed and stay on track. Our meetings provide ongoing support and are delivered by experienced and qualified NHS Weight Matters Trainers.

On-line support programmes
A one year online support voucher available and is particularly useful for those who may find it difficult to attend a group session or 1:1 session due to time constraints. Through our online support you will be able to access all the information you need as and when you need it, helping support you at a time that fits around your life.

Portion Control Programme
Our easy to follow portion control programme will help you get to grips with sensible eating which is based around the five food groups from the eatwell plate so you can make small changes that really make a difference to your weight. We will support you to make sense of food labels, get you motivated to move more and help improve your self esteem and reduce your stress levels!

The Eatwell Plate
The eatwell plate makes healthy eating easier to understand. In our weight matters courses we show you the types and proportions of foods you need to have a healthy and well balanced diet.
A varied diet should include lots of different foods to ensure that you get all the nutrients you need, but the proportion of these foods on your plate is equally as important. It is a matter of eating the right amount from each of the food groups and we understand that not everyone knows what and how much they should be eating in a day.
The eatwell plate shows how much of what you eat should come from each food group. This includes everything you eat during the day, including snacks. So try and eat:
